Upon Stepping through a Door with Hummingbirds Painted on the Lintel

Dorian Alexander

Welcome.

Did you pass through a door with hummingbirds painted on the lintel? It might not have been hummingbirds. Perhaps you dipped into a pool – green as glass – entranced by banks of spiraling cowrie shells or chased sparks of amethyst grace up an old fire escape. There are many ways here. You will never forget the one you found. But…

If you are not careful, you may forget the reason you found it: that glitter smeared above your eye; the silky keen of your yearning; the constellation of mischief pricking and prodding the moonlight globule of your soul. Please. For all our sakes, do not.

Now.

I will limit any further advice to the following:

Sometimes you will be made of wood and other times of snow, but when you commune with others you will always gleam wet and black. Do not shy away from these pellucid tears. If you venture into the forest, humble yourself. To the beasts Unknown you are prey. Many will invite you to drink from The Well. There is no harm in doing so, but know it usually promises more than it can grant. Do not mind the White Queen. Hers is a fading power. Only the strongest enchantments survive past dawn. Do not mourn them their nature. The magic here does not need your protection, so hold it out in front of you. Clasped fearfully against your breast, it will only become bitter ash.

Finally, remember that this is no dream. It is desire.

Good luck.
